In 2027, Plastic Odyssey is preparing a dedicated Mediterranean expedition in one of the most plastic-polluted seas in the world. Constrained by its semi-enclosed geography and dense coastal populations, the Mediterranean concentrates alarming levels of microplastics. This mission will combine public awareness, targeted field action, and dialogue with scientists and decision-makers. Beyond operations at sea, it aims to strengthen regional cooperation and policy engagement. The route and partnerships are under study, and stakeholders are invited to get involved.
A sea under extreme pressure
The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most plastic-polluted seas in the world. Due to its semi-enclosed geography, high coastal population density, and intense maritime traffic, plastic accumulates there at very high concentrations.
Scientific studies consistently show that microplastic concentrations in parts of the Mediterranean are among the highest ever recorded, in some areas comparable to or exceeding those measured in major oceanic accumulation zones.
Exploring a new kind of expedition
In 2027, we are exploring the opportunity to organize a dedicated expedition across the Mediterranean, combining:
Public awareness and education
Targeted field action, including cleanups and research
Dialogue with scientists, civil society, and governments
Potential stopovers under consideration include areas of high ecological value, such as marine zones near Ibiza, where parts of the surrounding environment benefit from UNESCO recognition.
Beyond action at sea
With global negotiations on plastic pollution facing delays, several Mediterranean countries are exploring stronger regional cooperation. This prospective expedition would also mark a new chapter for Plastic Odyssey by engaging more directly in policy dialogue and advocacy, alongside field operations.
Get involved
The route, partners, and scope of this expedition are currently under study.
